Point to Point Leaf Veins

During a recent class on P2P, I showed how simple it is to quilt vein
lines into appliqued leaves, using P2P. It doesn't matter what angle
the leaves are placed on the quilt, if the pattern is drawn to work P2P,
the vein lines will drop right in.

I have been designing leaf veins for my quilts, as I needed them, but I
didn't see how they could be useable on other quilts. BUT, now with
our basic resizing handles, plus Divide and Warp, this type of pattern
can easily be adjusted to fit almost any applique.

The first set shown below includes a variety of basic straight vein
lines which complement a folk art look.

The curves and double curves have a soft look to them and should
work in almost any situation. The first six cuved styles include R and L
variations, so study the curve of your leaf and choose what fits best.

Please note: the leaf shapes are only suggestions and are not part of
the actual pattern.

Here's a set I consider Traditional shapes. They're the type of leaves
found in traditional 19th century style applique.

Study the leaf shapes on the quilt you are working on and then
compare them to the outlines shown here. With a little stretching
and squeezing, you should be able to create and save a .csq to fit
those shapes.

And setting them into place P2P couldn't be easier !

This group of patterns offers two exciting possibilities.

Quilt them as is, like the patterns above,
to add a small center and petal vein lines
to appliqued flowers.

Patterns to use with Fill Outside

If the flower has an appliqued center
that you want to emphasize, use these patterns.

By using the Fill Outside function to eliminate part of
the lines in the center, the remaining pattern will quilt
SID around the center and add vein lines to the petals.
This is an especially good trick for making the pattern
fit around an irregularly shaped center.

Flower Centers and Details

Use this collection of patterns to add details to flower centers,
a variety of vein lines to flower petals,
or texture to whole flowers.

Please note: pattern lines are in black; red lines represent applique shapes.

Simple repeats to add texture to flower centers.

This group of patterns will quilt the both the
center circle and the petal vein lines.

This group of patterns can be used to add detail to a flower center
or to add texture to a full flower shape.

For variety, extend a pattern beyond
the center and partially fill the petals.
