Here is a new group of patterns designed for the
Modern Quilts we are beginning to see.

Patterns are linear, graphic, and dense; some of them
show roots in Op Art design, with change of spacing
between the lines creating a dimensional effect.

You'll find P2P blocks, repeat blocks, patterns that
extend across the full width of the quilt, and some that
are rotated and repeated to form the complete pattern.
Some of the larger designs are complex enough to use
a single block across an entire wall quilt.

Sample layouts are shown with each pattern to help you
see the full effect.

A few are deeply nested and should be cropped
along the edges with the Fill function.
Enjoy!

Squares and Orb can be used as Repeat Patterns, Pattern to Boundary in blocks,
or as a single pattern enlarged to cover an entire small quilt.
Modern Logs Quad will set this alternating pattern of four log blocks at one time
and can be repeated to cover any size quilt..
Lines, Curves, and Serpentine can be sized to any width
and repeated as necessary for the length of the quilt.
Grid, Weave and Warp are meant to be stitched in one direction over the entire quilt.
Then either rotate the pattern or turn the quilt and repeat the pattern in the other direction.
The Modern Basket Weave patterns can be used across a full quilt,
or they can be used as a Fill Inside to add texture within a defined boundary.
Eccentric and Clamshells are deeply nested patterns. Use Fill to crop the edges to fit your quilt.

New Patterns for Modern Quilts

The hottest trend in quiltmaking today is Modern. These quilts are bold, graphic, pieced quilts with lots of open
background space. Quilting designs tend to be linear, abstract and dense. I’ve had fun designing quilt tops and
patterns I think complement this new look. My new group of Modern patterns again includes blocks, pantos, and
linear designs that move across the whole quilt and back again.

Deep Box  is a block pattern which has a strong Op Art look when repeated. Two simpler blocks, Greek Key and
Concentric Squares, can be skewed for backgrounds spaces in improvisational piecing.

Leaves and Lollipops are fresh, fun choices for baby quilts. Chain and Fishnet are linear patterns which quilt very
quickly and can also be filled with a variety of P2P patterns for more visual interest

Dew Drops has been combined with curved lines for a new look. Loops, Ripples, Scribbles, Snails and Peacock
Feathers are the other curvy designs in this set.

Enjoy the quilted samples included here and please share your quilt photos with us!

Modern Chain and Modern Fishnet both quilt across the entire quilt and back again.
Rows of pattern add wonderful abstract texture to the quilt surface.

For more pattern or visual interest, use the P2P patterns below
to drop another motif into each section.

In the quilt pictured below, I changed thread color and dropped four different
patterns randomly into various sections of the patchwork.
The following five patterns can be set up in Repeat Patterns and alternating rows
to create the designs shown. Each one will give your quilt great abstract texture.

Or the individual patterns can be dropped P2P into the Chain or Fishnet pattern
for a more complex design.

Below are links to several pdf pages with some helpful hints in setting up
the different styles of Modern patterns.

Many are meant to quilt across the entire width of the quilt and back again.
Others are single block, repeats for pantos, or deeply nested curves.

Read through the steps to see the best approach to each group.
